1) how we tend to form relationships with others (within the group, and thus outside the group)
2) that we can explore new social roles and ways of being/relating
3) that we are not alone
Process Groups can be uniquely effective for a wide range of interpersonal difficulties:
-frustration and dissatisfaction in relationships
-uncertainty of direction
-anxiety or nervousness
-loneliness, difficulty feeling close to others
-struggling with trust and anger in relationships
What is an Interpersonal Process Group, and What Can You Expect?
An interpersonal process group centers on our thoughts and reactions that come up in the presence of the 6-8 other group members in each weekly 90 minute meeting. I as the group leader am responsible for creating a safe space for each member to fully participate; this means meeting with each member individually before the group begins to ensure that all members are in agreement with the goals and boundaries. In this environment, we learn about the social roles we tend to take on within a group, learn how these roles can be to our advantage and disadvantage. One of the aims is to try on new roles, learn how to be more flexible in order to get what we want in relationships and interactions with others. This includes learning communication skills and identifying and expressing emotions. An interpersonal process group is a powerful space for learning, self-change, and empowerment of one-another.
